Set up Xbox 360 as a Windows Media Center extender

Overview

Note Xbox One does not support streaming media from Windows Media Center.


You can use Windows Media Center to stream music, pictures and video to your Xbox 360 console from any computer on your home network. The following steps are for the versions of Windows that include Media Center (Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Home Premium, and Windows 7 Enterprise versions). Step 1: Connect your console to your network

If you have already connected your console to your network, you can go to step 2 below.
If not, connect your console to your home network using a wired or wireless connection. Then, test to make sure that your Xbox console connects successfully. Here’s how:
  1. On your Xbox controller, press the Guide button.

  1. Go to Settings, then select System Settings.

  1. Select Network Settings.

  1. Select the name of your wireless network, or select Wired Network for a wired connection.

  1. Select Test Xbox Live Connection.

If the network status for the connection to your network shows as Connected, go to step 2 below. Otherwise, select More Info on your console and follow the suggestions.

Step 2: Remove previous connections (if necessary)

If you previously connected a computer to your Xbox 360 console, you will need to remove the existing connection.
You can remove the previous steps on your computer or on your Xbox console:
Computer steps: Remove previous connections
  1. Start Windows Media Center.
  2. At the bottom of the menu, click the Down Arrow, and under Tasks, click Settings.

  1. Click Extender.

  1. Click Xbox 360 Media Center Extender.
  2. Click Uninstall.
  3. Click Next.
Console steps: Remove previous connections
  1. Go to My Settings, and then select System.
  2. Select Computers.
  3. Select Windows Media Center.
  4. Select Disconnect.
  5. Press the B button on your controller to return to the Xbox Dashboard.

Step 3: Get the setup key on your console

  1. On your console, go to Apps, select My Apps, and then select Windows Media Center.
  2. Tip Not seeing Apps? You might need to Update your Xbox 360 console software.
  3. Select Continue.
  4. Write down the 8-digit setup key.

Step 4: Add your console to Windows Media Center

  1. Start Windows Media Center on your computer.
  2. Go to Tasks, and then click Add Extender.

  1. On the Extender Setup screen, click Next.

  1. When prompted, enter the 8-digit setup key from Step 3.

Step 5: Start Windows Media Center on your console

Go to Apps, select My Apps, and then select Windows Media Center. It will take some time to build your media libraries the first time you use Windows Media Center on your console.

Connect your Xbox 360 console to Xbox Live using a Windows computer in place of a router

Overview

If you want to connect your Xbox 360 console to Xbox Live and you do not have a router, you can connect your console to your Windows computer and use its internet connection.
Note Windows Internet Connection Sharing may not work on Windows 8.1 when the PC network is connected by using the Point to Point Protocol (PPP). If you use a PPP connection, you will have to use either a wired or wireless router. For help, see the Xbox Live first-time connection solution.
There are two ways you connect to Xbox Live without using a router.

 

 

 

Use Windows Internet Connection Sharing

You can use Windows Internet Connection Sharing to share your Internet connection between your computer and your Xbox 360 console. If you do this, both the console and your computer can access the Internet at the same time.
To use Internet Connection Sharing, you must have the following:
  • A computer that has two network adapters
Note Most laptop computers have two network adapters, one for a wired connection and one for a wireless connection.
  • A USB modem that has at least one Ethernet connection
  • Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 (The Windows 7 Starter edition does not support this feature.)
  • High-speed Internet access
  • A standard Ethernet cable
Set up Windows Internet Connection Sharing
The following steps show Windows 7 and Windows 8 screen images. However, the steps are the same for earlier versions of Windows, unless otherwise indicated.
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. In the Search programs and files box, type ncpa.cpl, and then press ENTER.
    For Windows XP: Click the Start button, click Run, type ncpa.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.

  1. Right-click the network connection that you want to share, and then click Properties. The appropriate network connection to share is the one between your computer and your modem, not the one between your computer and your Xbox 360 console.

  1. Click the Sharing tab. If you are using Windows XP, select the Advanced tab.

  1. Select Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet Connection, and then click OK.

  2. Wait for the network connection status to change to Shared.

  1. Start your web browser, and try to connect to the Internet. If you cannot connect to the Internet, make sure that you are sharing the primary Internet connection in step 3.
  2. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the network port on your computer. Plug the other end of the network cable into the back of your Xbox 360 console.
  3. On your Xbox 360 console, make sure that all network settings are set to Automatic.
    Here's how:
    Note If you are connecting to a wireless network, or if you have PPPoE settings entered, note the settings because you might have to enter them later.

    1. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and then select System Settings.
    2. Select Network Settings.
    3. Select Wired Network if you are prompted to do so.
    4. Select the Additional Settings tab.
    5. Select Restore to Factory defaults.
  4. Test your Xbox Live connection. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and then select System Settings.
    2. Select Network Settings.
    3. Select Wired Network if you are prompted to do so.
    4. Select Test Xbox Live Connection.
Troubleshooting Internet Connection Sharing issues
Solution 1: Make Sure Windows Internet Connection Sharing is set up correctly
If the Sharing tab is not displayed or, in Windows XP, you do not see the option Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection, one of the following might be true:
  • Your computer does not have two network adapters. To resolve this problem, install a second network adapter in your computer or check to see if your existing network adapters are functioning correctly.
  • You might be trying to share the wrong network connection. To resolve this problem, repeat step 3 above, and select a different network connection.
Solution 2: Set your console's IP settings manually
If you receive either of the following error messages, try the steps below:
Can't obtain an IP address from your router or modem
Your DNS server can't resolve Xbox Live server names
  1. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and then select System Settings.
  2. Select Network Settings.
  3. Select Wired Network if you are prompted to do so.
  4. Select Configure Network.
  5. On the Basic Settings tab, select IP Settings.
  6. Select Manual, and then select IP Address.
  7. Enter 192.168.0.2, and then select Done.
  8. Select Subnet Mask, enter 255.255.255.0, and then select Done.
  9. Select Gateway, enter 192.168.0.1, and then select Done.
  10. On the Basic Settings tab, select DNS Settings.
  11. Select Manual.
  12. Select Primary DNS Server.
  13. Enter 192.168.0.1, and then select Done.
  14. Select Done again.
  15. Press B on your controller, and then select Test Xbox Live Connection.

Create a network bridge connection

If you have a laptop computer with both wired and wireless network adapters, you can use your laptop to connect your Xbox 360 console to Xbox Live. This type of connection is called a network bridge connection. .
This connection is quick and easy, but you cannot access the Internet on the laptop when the laptop is connected to your Xbox 360 console.
To use a network bridge connection, you must have the following:
  • A computer with two network adapters
  • Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    Note The Windows 7 Starter edition does not support this feature.
  • High-speed Internet access
  • A standard Ethernet cable
Set up a network bridge connection
Note The following steps show Windows 7 and Windows 8 images. However, the steps are the same for earlier versions of Microsoft Windows, unless otherwise indicated.
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. In the Search programs and files box, type ncpa.cpl, and then press ENTER.
    Windows XP: Click the Start button, click Run, type ncpa.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.

  1. Select the two network connections that you want to bridge. To do this, click the first network connection, press and hold CTRL, and then click the second network connection.

  1. Right-click either of the selected network connections, and then click Bridge Connections.

  1. Wait for the new connection icon to be displayed.
    Note The new icon will be labeled Network Bridge. When the icon appears, the new connection is ready to use.

  1. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the network port on your portable computer. Plug the other end of the network cable into the back of your Xbox 360 console.

  2. On your Xbox 360 console, make sure that all network settings are set to Automatic.
    Here’s how:

    3. Select Wired Network if you are prompted to do so.
    4. Select Test Xbox Live Connection.

How to check if windows is activated Permanently?

I will respond as soon as possible. Now to check if your windows is activated permanently or on a temporary basis, you can just follow the instructions given below:
  • Open Command Prompt.
If you know how to open command prompt then move to step no 2. In Windows XP: Goto Start menu > Open Run > Type cmd > Hit enter. In Windows 7 and 8: Goto start > Type cmd > Hit enter.
  • Now enter the following command in the command prompt,
slmgr/xpr
  • And wait for a second
  • Then a dialogue box will appear which will tell you the status of your windows activation.

There was an age, when the only type of TVs and computer monitors in use were CRT (cathode ray tube) types, which made an imposing presence. The domination of CRTs is over today with the arrival of LCD, Plasma, DLP and LED TVs and monitors. I had heard about LED-based light fixtures, but LED monitors took me by surprise. That is when I decided to dig deep and know more about what LED monitors are and how they work. I discovered that they have a lot of similarities with LCD TVs and monitors. In fact, I found that there is a lot of confusion regarding LED (Light Emitting Diode) and LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) monitors that needed clarification.

LED Vs. LCD Monitor Review

Let me begin this comparison between LED and LCD monitors with an explanation of fundamental differences between these two types.

Basic Difference
LED and LCD monitors are based on the same basic technology for image display, but differ in the kind of backlighting used. While these monitors use cold cathode fluorescent lamps for backlighting, the latter use light emitting diodes. This is the prime difference between the two display technologies. So LED monitors are in actuality, a type of LCD monitors, or an improvement over them.

Unlike CRT monitors that generate their own light through cathode ray incidence on fluorescent materials, LCD displays have to rely on external lighting, as their display is created through manipulation of light, passing through polarized liquid crystals. The backlighting affects picture quality substantially and light shed by LEDs offers superior picture quality, compared to LCDs.

This is because LEDs offer much more gradation in intensity and a larger light wavelength spectrum, giving a truer color quality. These types of monitors offer a better dynamic contrast ratio too. So if you compare LED and LCD monitors from a gaming perspective and other intensive graphic applications, LED monitors are surely better choices, as they provide vivid and more lifelike colors, with better gradation.

There are two types of LED backlighting techniques used. One is RGB dynamic LED and the other one is edge LED. The former type of backlighting uses LEDs placed behind the LCD TV or monitor screens, while the latter uses LEDs placed around the monitor rim, from where light is made to diffuse behind the screen. Since LEDs are placed around the rim on edge LED monitors, they can be a lot slimmer than conventional LCDs.

LED monitors cure one of the basic problems with LCD TVs, which is the inability to display true black colors. They can produce true black hues, by switching off LEDs entirely, increasing the 'blackness' quotient of black colors, providing better contrast in the process. 

Power Consumption
LED monitors are a very recently introduced technology and they are preferred over LCD monitors, because of the amazingly rich picture quality and comfort of viewing. One more advantage that LED monitors have over LCD ones is the power consumption factor. LED monitors require a lot less power to operate than cold cathode fluorescent lamps. This property can be attributed to the inherently low energy needs of an LED.

LED monitors are also a lot softer on the eyes than LCD monitors which make them popular choices for people who work for long hours on their desktop computers. Their power consumption is as much as 40% lesser than conventional LCD monitors. They are also a lot more eco-friendly, because mercury is not used in their production. LEDs last longer than cold cathode fluorescent lamps, with little reduction in their power output over time, which makes these monitors long-lasting.

Cost
One major factor that has been holding back LED technology from reaching the masses is the high price factor. The manufacturing of these devices is a bit costlier currently, compared to LCD displays which have raised their overall price. However, the cost gap is slowly lowering with time, as the demand for the superior LED back-lit displays is on the rise, all over the world. Even laptop computers of today, come equipped with LED displays.

It will take time for the manufacturing costs of this technology to go down, but when it does, it will surely replace conventional LCD monitors in large numbers.
